Period One for Warming up

Teaching Aims: 1. Learn to interview people and write down the answers on the survey form.

              2. Let the Ss know the meaning of the word “volunteer”.

Contents: 1. What do you do to help your parents at home?

        2. What do you do to help your friends at school?

        3. What do you do to help people who are in trouble in your community?

        4. What does the word “volunteer” mean?

        5. Do you want to be a volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing?

        6. What do you do to help people who you don’t know?

Period Two for Reading:

Teaching Aims: 1. Try to grasp the meaning of the whole letter

             2. Master the key words and useful phrases.

Contents      1. hear from sb. = to receive news from someone, usually by letter.

         e.g. 1.  Have you heard from Sarah lately?

             2.  I haven’t heard from her for ages.

             2. be dying to do sth. = want to do sth very much, so that it is difficult to wait (口) 迫不及待地想做某事,渴望做某事

          e.g.  1. We’re dying to get started. 我们迫不及待地想开始。

               2. They’re dying to learn English well.

          3. come across = to meet, find, or discover sb or sth by chance 偶然发现

            e.g. 1. He had never come across a person like Shiela. 他从没遇到过像希拉这样的人。

                2. I came across an old friend in the street the other day.

                 4. relevant adj. directly connected with the subject or problem being discussed or considered  有关的,切题的

            e.g. 1. For further information see the relevant chapters in the users’ manual. 详情请查阅使用说明中的相关章节。

          5. stick out 伸出

               e.g. Peter’s ears stick out and Lucy stuck her tongue out.

                   彼得长着一对招风耳朵,而露西伸出舌头。

             6. adjust vi & vt. 调整,使适合= to gradually get used to a new situation by making small changes to the way you do things.

            e.g. They’ll soon settle in --- Kids are very good at adjusting.

                   他们很快就会安顿下来,孩子们很会适应环境。

          7. dry out = to become or make sth completely dry after it has been very wet 使……干透

            dry sth out  e.g. Dry your book out on the radiator.

                              把你的书放在暖气上烤干。

          8. dry up   dry sth up

              e.g. The sun has completely dried up the soil and the crops are dying. 太阳把土地都烤干了,庄稼即将枯死。

          9. privilege  n. 特权,特别优待。= a special advantage that is given only to one person or group of people (特权)

           e.g.  Don’t forget that using the car is a privilege, not a right.

                     别忘了使用这辆汽车是特权,而不是权利。

 

 

Period Three for comprehending:

Teaching aims: 1. Try to comprehend the whole letter.

  2. Find or guess the reasons for the facts according to the reading passage.

Contents: 1. What was Jo’s job in PNG?

        2. What kind of students were in her class?

        3. Describe the classrooms in your own words.

        4. What can you say about life in the village?

        5. Would you like to go to a school like the one described in the letter? Give reasons.

        6. Why do you think Jo became a volunteer in PNG?

        7. Would you like to work as a volunteer in a poor area? Give reasons.

        8. Did you guess correctly about the kind of job Jo has?

        9. What are the differences between the school you go to and the one described in the letter?

       10. What have you learned about the customs and lives of the people in Tombe’s village? Read Jo’s letter again and look at her photos. The complete the table below.

Period Four for Learning about and using language.

Teaching Aims: 1. Review the attributive clause.

             2. Review useful words and expressions and structures.

Contents:     1. The person to whom you nodded just now is on holiday.

             2. The woman whose daughter came back from the US is over there.

             3. The reason why I didn’t finish my homework is that I had forgotten it.

             4. I’m really dying for a glass of beer on a day like this.

             5. They were all waiting there, thirsty for news.

             6. It took him a while to adapt himself to the new job.

             7. The gift you give is not something your loved one keeps but a contribution towards the lives of people who really need it.

            8. I won’t ever forget the day when I came to this school.
